How do you get PERFECT skin?? Isn’t that the million dollar question!? And how many skin care companies PROMISE you perfect, clear, healthy skin if you JUST buy their product? Too many to even count. There are even more DIY clear skin tricks out there too, and trust me I’ve tried them all. (Anyone else get chemical burns on their face from trying to get rid of zits with toothpaste or baking soda and vinegar? Yeah Junior High was rough!) And the truth is there is no miracle cure for perfect skin because what even is “perfect skin?” Everyone will answer that differently. To me perfect skin would be skin that doesn’t get too oily or too dry (and of course have no zits!) Even though your definition will probably be a bit different than mine the one thing we can all do to help us achieve our ideal skin is to have HEALTHY skin!
Wouldn’t you love the thought of striving for healthy skin instead of perfect skin? It makes it a way more realistic goal to work towards. Now I’m going to share my four steps to healthier skin with you!
The first step to healthier skin is in your makeup. Now we all know that makeup can clog our pours, not let our skin breathe, and have ingredients or chemicals in it that can cause us to breakout in acne, red spots, rashes, or hives. So does that mean makeup is bad and to have healthy skin we should never use it? NO! (That would put me out of a job!) Makeup is awesome BUT, we should be more careful about what kind of makeup we put on our face. There are lots of companies out there that have “clean” makeup or makeup that is good for your skin. Some of these companies products cost a fortune and some are more reasonable, but the biggest thing you want to know about when looking for makeup (no matter the brand) is what’s in the ingredients. KNOW what you are putting on your face. If the makeup has something in it that you have no clue what it is, research it! Don’t just trust that it’s good for you because most of the time it’s probably not.
My favorite brand of “clean” makeup is Younique. I know a lot of people hate on Younique because they’ve probably gotten a million messages from one of their presenters which can be SO annoying, but hear me out before you stop reading!! I genuinely love their products and since using their makeup I don’t break out as often when I wear it, even when I forget to take it off for a few days! (which is a BIG no no. I’ll talk later on about why you shouldn’t sleep in your makeup EVEN when using makeup that is good for your skin.) My face doesn’t ever feel heavy or caked with makeup, and all of the ingredients are natural and plant based so I know I’m not putting anything harmful on my skin. Younique’s products are also affordable which is really nice if your on a budget like me. You may have to try out a few different makeup brands though to decide what is best for you. I tried out several different brands until I found Younique so don’t get discouraged if the first brand you try still doesn’t work for you. (A bonus tip about why I like Younique is you can return anything for a FULL refund within 14 days! When trying to find a makeup brand you like, works for your skin, and is actually good for your skin it can get expensive! You’re constantly buying makeup and if you don’t like it then you end up wasting it! So I really like that with Younique I can send anything back and not feel like I’m taking a risk by buying one of their products.)
Now let’s talk about sleeping in our makeup. IT’S BAD and does not help us get healthier skin! Even if you’re using a makeup brand that is good for you and clean, like Younique, yes it will be better on your skin, but you still shouldn’t do it. While those clean makeup brands won’t “clog your pores” after a day of use, they will after several days of you never taking your makeup off. Your skin needs to breathe and be cleaned to help it be healthier. That brings us to the second step of healthier skin and that is cleaning your skin regularly and thoroughly. (again don’t sleep in your makeup!) What you use to wash and clean your face is entirely up to you, but I love to use Younique’s Illuminate clear facial cleanser (for oily skin.) This stuff is my miracle in a bottle. I’ve always had really oily skin and would use face washes for oily skin only to have them dry my skin out so much that I would have to use stuff for dry skin and then my skin would get oily again and the cycle would just continue! When I started using Younique’s face wash though, my skin felt significantly less oily, but NOT DRY. It just feels healthy. They also have a cleanser for normal/dry skin and I have only heard good things from people who use it. Now here’s my BIG SECRET to cleaning your skin… just washing your face isn’t enough. Here’s why. When you just wash your face you’re basically just taking some of your makeup off and not actually cleaning your skin. If you took a makeup wipe and wiped your skin after just washing your face you would probably still have a little makeup on. That means your makeup is mostly gone, but your skin isn’t clean. SO I recommend taking a makeup wipe and wiping all your makeup off BEFORE washing your face. I know a lot of people only do one of the other, but you should really do both. If you don’t have any makeup wipes then just wash your face twice. (I sometimes still wash my face twice after using a makeup wipe if I had a lot of makeup on that day.) This will improve the health of your skin DRAMATICALLY! I noticed a huge change in my skin after doing this for only a week. I use Younique’s makeup remover cloths, but you can use any brand. I haven’t noticed a huge difference the brand makes. *bonus tip. I had a reader ask if she could use baby wipes and YES you can. They are gentle enough for your baby so they are for sure gentle enough for your skin. It won’t get your makeup off as easily or completely as a makeup wipe will, but it does a pretty good job!*
The third step to healthier skin is moisturizing. Even if you have oily skin like me you need to moisturize. Our skin needs it to be healthy. Don’t use just any lotion you have lying around the house though. You will want to get a moisturizer that is specifically for faces. Some body lotions will cause the face to break out or cause weird reactions so it’s important to get one designed specifically for the skin on your face. If you have oily skin try looking for a lightweight moisturizer like Younique’s Divine daily moisturizer. This stuff feels as light as water, but leaves my skin feeling so smooth. It does’t matter what you use, just don’t skip this important part of your skin care routine. It will help keep your skin look younger, healthier and help prevent against wrinkles.
Now for our fourth and final step to healthier skin…drink lots of WATER. Yes it’s that simple. Drinking water is one of the best things you can do for your skin. A few months ago I had broken out really bad because I hadn’t been doing a single one of these steps (and pregnancy is rough on your skin) so I decided that I was going to try and drink 8 glasses of water a day along with doing all the other three steps and see how it improved my skin. After just a week my skin was completely clear, and looked healthier than it ever had before. After a month of doing this the skin on my entire body felt better! I had absolutely no eczema (which I usually get EXTREMELY bad in the winter months) and felt like my skin had a glow to it. Water helps with wrinkles and keeping our skin smooth from the inside, just like a moisturizer does on the outside. You don’t have to go straight for 8 glasses a day like I did, but try and drink a cup or two during the day and build up to more. If I carry around a water bottle with me it’s much easier to remember to drink water so find yourself a cute water bottle and get drinking for healthier skin!
